THE POST

A requirement has arisen for a well-qualified, experienced and flexible Trumpet Tutor to join the Howell’s peripatetic team. This person will be engaged by school to provide one-to-one or small group tuition via a contract with parents.

Peripatetic teachers are self-employed, and the fees are decided annually in agreement between the peripatetic staff and the school. As self-employed teachers, fees are paid directly to the tutor from the parent/guardian. Peppercorn rent for all peripatetic staff is £15 per year.

The Music department offers a lively working environment in excellent, purpose-built accommodation. Students are taught in the Prep School to Year 9 on a rotational system within the school day. Students in Years 10 to 13 need to have fixed lessons outside the curriculum i.e. lunchtime, before or after school.

The successful applicant would need to have had experience in teaching across the range of ages. Staff are expected to keep registers and give regular parental feedback. ABRSM exams are held at least once a year in the school and Trinity examinations may take place, depending on candidate numbers.

School hours are 8.30am to 3.30pm (3.15pm in Prep), with students being taught before school (8am) and after school (until 5pm). Flexibility in working hours may be necessary at times depending on the number of students.

Skills, qualifications & experience should include:

• Teaching / Performance Diploma or equivalent

• Excellent playing/teaching ability on principal instrument

• Experience of working with a variety of students at different levels

• Experience of preparing students for instrumental examinations

• Able to demonstrate a commitment to creating a positive culture of student welfare.

• Able to create a supportive and inclusive approach regarding different cultures, backgrounds, abilities and personal choices.

About the School

Howell’s School, Llandaff, is one of the oldest girls’ school in Wales, having opened in August 1860. Since then, it has steadily expanded, both in terms of student numbers and physical size. The school now caters for girls from the age of 3 to 16 and girls and boys 16-18. Since 1980 it has been a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust, the largest organisation of independent schools in the UK. Its 25 member schools all have a reputation for consistently high academic standards, superb pastoral support and enviable co-curricular programmes.

The facilities inside the Victorian building and its more modern extensions are first-class and the opportunities for extracurricular activities, teamwork and confidence-building numerous. Academically, the school provides great added value, with results at both GCSE and A Level regularly greatly exceeding expectations.

Closing date: Monday 11th May 2026 at 9am
