Teacher of Classics (ECT/Graduate)

Hours: Full time

Contract: Permanent

Salary: Competitive salary plus benefits

Required from: September 2026

The role

This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and well-qualified Early Career Teacher (ECT) or graduate to take their first steps in a rewarding teaching career within a strong, dynamic and exciting Classics department at one of London’s leading independent schools.

With a strong emphasis on continuous professional development, you will have the chance to develop your teaching skills and gain valuable experience in a warm, supportive environment at South Hampstead High School. You will deliver well-organised, engaging and challenging Classics lessons that meet learners’ needs and expectations and are designed to raise levels of attainment.

We are looking for a well-qualified ECT or graduate who is capable of teaching Latin and Classical Civilisation from beginners’ level to A Level and beyond. The ability to teach Classical Greek would also be an advantage. This is a fantastic opportunity to grow as a teacher and make a real impact in a department that values enthusiasm, expertise and innovation.

The Classics Department

The Classics Department is a vibrant, well-resourced department, popular across the school. Around 8–20 pupils study Classical Greek at GCSE each year, with up to 7 continuing to A Level. Classical Civilisation A Level, covering The World of the Hero, Greek Theatre and Love and Relationships, is especially popular in the Sixth Form.

The department offers a rich extra-curricular programme, including trips to Classical sites in Italy, Greece, Sicily and France, visits to Hadrian’s Wall and Verulamium, theatre outings and gallery and museum trips in London. The Junior Classics Society is very popular, and staff participate in a partnership scheme with University College London School, soon expanding to more North London schools.
