Head of Economics

Hours: Full time

Contract: Permanent

Salary: Competitive salary plus benefits

Required from: September 2026

The role

South Hampstead High School is seeking a dynamic, energetic and well-qualified teacher to lead our thriving Economics department.

As Head of Economics, you will manage the day-to-day running of the department, ensuring that teaching and learning remain at the highest standard, while contributing to whole-school policy and strategic planning. Drawing on your strong management skills, you will inspire and support department members to achieve and maintain excellence, as well as oversee a rich extra-curricular programme that deepens students’ understanding of Economics beyond the classroom.

In addition to your leadership responsibilities, you will design and deliver stimulating Economics lessons to highly motivated and talented pupils in Years 12 and 13.

We are looking for a hardworking, enthusiastic teacher with a passion for Economics, excellent decision-making skills and a proven track record in teaching across KS3 to KS5. Previous experience in a management role (e.g. as Deputy Head of Department), is essential and you will be expected to show initiative, innovate in the classroom and contribute positively to the wider life of the school.

The Economics Department

Economics teaching at South Hampstead reflects the dynamic nature of the subject. The use of news stories and real time data is encouraged to build pupil interest and allow them to see real world impacts of economic theory. Extension and enrichment are key to the success of the department, which runs timetabled enrichment courses and lunchtime extension sessions designed to push the large number of students who consider the subject for further study. During the summer term of Year 12, this intensifies as we prepare Oxbridge applicants. This year we had 2 students accepted to interview with one obtaining a place.

As part of our broader provision, we encourage students to participate in initiatives such as the GAIN Stock Pitch Challenge, the IEA Budget Challenge and the LEAD programme in partnership with the London School of Economics, as well as to push themselves through a variety of essay competitions.
