The Department:
This is an exciting time to join as the leader for our thriving and ever-expanding department. At A Level, Economics and Business are well-established and highly popular subjects. We follow the Edexcel specifications for both subjects. Our Business and Economics students have achieved 74% and 93% A*-B grades respectively over the past 5 years, and many students pursue undergraduate degrees in related fields at leading universities, such as LSE, UCL, Warwick and Nottingham.
Economics & Business has considerably expanded its offer at Northwood College in recent years. From September 2025, we introduced our first cohort for GCSE Business. This option has proven tremendously popular with over half the year group opting for the subject. We follow the Edexcel specification. Students will sit their first examinations in Summer 2027.
All students in Year 9 study the Level 2 Certificate in Financial Education (CeFE) offered by Agored Cymru (previously by the London Institute of Banking and Finance). The Department also oversees the teaching of financial literacy through our PSHE programme across the school. There are also opportunities to work with our Junior School students on understanding money as part of their mathematics and numeracy lessons.
As part of our Sixth Form Extend programme, the Economics & Business Department have offered courses on Famous Economists (Contemporary and Classical) and hot topics such as the rise of China in the market for Electric Vehicles or the case for re-nationalising water and rail services. Our Extend programme is flexible around the needs of the students and the expertise of the teachers with courses changing each year.
The Department also runs the GDST Lead programme in year 12, run in partnership with the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE) in conjunction with 22 sister schools across the country. Through GDST LEAD we encourage students to develop an enterprising mindset and employability skills in order to bring a business idea to market so that they secure maximum returns for a social cause of their choice.
